How to audit URLs in an XML sitemap
A sitemap should describe canonical, indexable destinations that search engines can fetch directly. Status errors and unnecessary redirects waste crawl activity and often reveal stale publishing or migration rules.
Prioritize non-200 sitemap URLs
A healthy sitemap normally contains final URLs that return a successful response. Redirecting, missing or failing entries should be reviewed against the current site structure.
- Replace redirected entries with their final destinations.
- Remove retired 404 or 410 URLs when they should no longer be indexed.
- Investigate recurring 5xx responses and timeouts.
- Update sitemap generation rules so fixed problems do not return.
Audit large sitemap samples
This checker processes up to 1,000 URLs per run in controlled chunks. For larger sites, inspect important templates separately or divide the sitemap into logical sections such as products, categories, articles and localized pages.

Can I enter only the website address?
Yes. The tool first checks sitemap declarations in robots.txt, then tries common sitemap paths such as /sitemap.xml and /sitemap-index.xml.
Does this tool support sitemap index files?
Yes. It follows a controlled number of child sitemap files and collects their public URL entries.
How many sitemap URLs can I check?
The parser can discover up to 5,000 valid entries, and each live sitemap audit can check up to 1,000 URLs.
Can it open compressed sitemaps?
Yes. Standard gzip-compressed XML sitemaps are supported when the runtime can safely decompress them.
Should redirected URLs be listed in a sitemap?
Usually no. A sitemap should generally contain the final canonical URL rather than an address that first redirects elsewhere.
